Exploring Super Server in Sabayon Linux

Exploring Super Server in Sabayon

Sabayon uses the configuration directory /etc/xinetd for its super server

Let’s explore this directory, type:

sabayonx86 ~ # cd /etc/xinetd.d/

sabayonx86 xinetd.d # ll

total 40

-rw-r–r– 1 root root 221 2006-10-17 03:24 cups-lpd

-rw-r–r– 1 root root 282 2006-08-28 05:30 cvspserver

-rw-r–r– 1 root root 250 2006-05-05 22:29 fingerd

-rw-r–r– 1 root root 260 2006-10-17 01:52 git-daemon

-rw-r–r– 1 root root 295 2005-04-06 06:09 proftpd

-rw-r–r– 1 root root 280 2006-05-05 23:01 rexec

-rw-r–r– 1 root root 282 2006-05-05 23:01 rlogin

-rw-r–r– 1 root root 279 2006-05-05 23:01 rsh

-rw-r–r– 1 root root 329 2006-10-25 01:16 svnserve

-rw-r–r– 1 root root 528 2006-10-20 02:10 swat

Let’s look at the configuration file for the ftpd server:

sabayonx86 xinetd.d # more proftpd

#

# ProFTPd FTP daemon – http://www.proftpd.org

#

service ftp

{

flags = REUSE

socket_type = stream

instances = 30

wait = no

user = root

server = /usr/sbin/proftpd

log_on_success = HOST PID

log_on_failure = HOST

disable = yes

It has been disable. To enable it type disable = no.

But in this case the ftp server was not installed by default as shown below.

sabayonx86 xinetd.d # which proftpd

which: no proftpd in (/usr/kde/3.5/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/athena/sbin:/usr/i586-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/4.1.1:/opt/blackdown-jdk-1.4.2.03/bin:/opt/blackdown-jdk-1.4.2.03/jre/bin:/usr/kde/3.5/sbin:/usr/kde/3.5/bin:/usr/qt/3/bin:${NXDIR}/bin:/root/script:/root/script)

or another way to see if the package is installed, use the emerge command:

sabayonx86 xinetd.d # emerge –search ftp
