Mounting USB Thumbdrives

Mounting USB Thumbdrives

Insert your thumbdrive and run the following command to see if it is automatically mounted

root:# mount

/dev/hda1 on / type ext3 (rw)

tmpfs on /tmp type tmpfs (rw,size=128M,nr_inodes=8M,mode=1777)

usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw,devgid=10,devmode=0666)

tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)

/dev/sda1 on /mnt/vl-hot/sda/vol1 type vfat (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,noatime,uid=0,gid=100,fmask=0111,dmask=0000,quiet,shortname=mixed,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-15)

Yes, the thumbdrive is mounted as /mnt/vl-hot/sda/vol1 and the device filename is /dev/sda1.

You can also type the following command:

root:# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/hda: 30.7 GB, 30750031872 bytes

16 heads, 63 sectors/track, 59582 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 = 516096 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

/dev/hda1 * 1 58516 29492032+ 83 Linux

/dev/hda2 58517 59582 537264 5 Extended

/dev/hda5 58517 59582 537232+ 82 Linux swap

Disk /dev/sda: 8127 MB, 8127512576 bytes

5 heads, 32 sectors/track, 99212 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 160 * 512 = 81920 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

/dev/sda1 * 51 99213 7932992 c W95 FAT32 (LBA)

To read the contents of the thumbdrive, you have to go to the directory where the thumbdrive was mounted, and in my case it is /mnt/vl-hot/sda/vol1

root:# cd /mnt/vl-hot/sda/vol1/

neptune://mnt/vl-hot/sda/vol1

root:# ls

Unmounting the Thumbdrive

To unmount the thumbdrive, you have to get out of the thumbdrive directory and use the umount command:

root:# cd /

neptune://

root:# umount /mnt/vl-hot/sda/vol1/

or you can type:

root:# cd /

neptune://

root:# umount /dev/sda1
