Connecting to the Internet via Wired Broadband Modem in Mandrivia 2009

After you have plugged in your Ethernet cable to the broadband modem, open a terminal console and type:

[root@localhost ~]# ip route show

192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0  proto kernel  scope link  src 192.168.1.100  metric 10

169.254.0.0/16 dev eth0  scope link  metric 10

default via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0  metric 10

This shows that your Linux workstation was assigned IP address 192.168.1.100 by the modem and that the default gateway i.e. Your broadband modem IP address is 192.168.1.1. Launch your web browser, in my case Firefoz and go to any web site. You should be able to access the Intenet.

Another useful command to check your Ethernet LAN card address is :

[root@localhost ~]# ifconfig eth0

eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:E0:4D:69:5B:94

          inet addr:192.168.1.100  Bcast:192.168.1.255  Mask:255.255.255.0

          inet6 addr: fe80::2e0:4dff:fe69:5b94/64 Scope:Link

          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1

          RX packets:184 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

          TX packets:168 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000

          RX bytes:200403 (195.7 KiB)  TX bytes:17464 (17.0 KiB)

          Interrupt:32 Base address:0x8000
