Accessing Removable Storage Devices in Dreamlinux 2.2

Accessing Removable Storage Devices in Dreamlinux 2.2

Insert your USB thumbdrive or external harddisk

Dreamlinux will automatically detect your device and mount it.

To check the device, type:

root@mars:~# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/hda: 8622 MB, 8622931968 bytes

255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1048 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Disk identifier: 0xe65b0c41

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

/dev/hda1 * 1 956 7679038+ 83 Linux

/dev/hda2 957 1048 738990 5 Extended

/dev/hda5 957 1048 738958+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

Disk /dev/sda: 128 MB, 128974848 bytes

6 heads, 63 sectors/track, 666 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 378 * 512 = 193536 bytes

Disk identifier: 0x092b6c5a

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

/dev/sda1 * 1 667 125920+ 6 FAT16

Partition 1 has different physical/logical endings:

phys=(665, 5, 63) logical=(666, 2, 30)

From the above results, /dev/sda1 is your USB thumbdrive.

Another way is to type,

root@mars:~# mount

/dev/hda1 on / type ext3 (rw)

proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)

/sys on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)

udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=0755)

devshm on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)

devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=620)

automount(pid2490) on /mnt/auto type autofs (rw,fd=4,pgrp=2490,minproto=2,maxproto=4)

The last line, /mnt/auto will mount the USB thumbdrive. Simply navigate to the directory.

root@mars:~# cd /mnt/auto/

List the files

root@mars:/mnt/auto# ls -l

total 0

dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Aug 12 07:59 cdrom

dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Aug 12 07:59 floppy

dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Aug 12 07:59 sda1

The directory sda1 refers to your thumbdrive. Simple as that.

root@mars:/mnt/auto# ls -l sda1/

total 544

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 53481 Nov 7 2006 LinuxAdmin1.txt

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 16384 Jul 11 2008 SamsungPictures

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 415170 Oct 8 2008 celine_newday4.mp3

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 8893 Nov 7 2006 cronlist.txt

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 266 Nov 9 2009 desktop.ini

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 14 2006 doc_aide
